This is medical/ food grade silica gel. Orange indicating silica gel or desiccant that changes color to green when saturated with moisture or humidity. Orange beads are safest and highest cost silica gel in comparison to white (which does not change color when filled with moisture) or blue (which is color indicating, but contains cobalt chloride which is not safe if ingested). Orange silica gel is non-toxic, odorless, and non-corrosive in nature. This silica gel is DMF free, which means that no Dimethyl Fumarate (DMF) was used in its production, which is an extra benefit in terms of quality and safety. Silica gel is basically silica oxide or SiO2.
This silica gel is reusable/ rechargeable. To regenerate orange silica gel beads for reuse, simply heat them in an oven at 150-200 degrees Fahrenheit for a couple of hours. This will help remove any moisture from the beads and they can be reused again, and become as good as new. Orange beads may need to be heated for a longer time when compared to the blue beads to regenerate them and make them reusable. Our silica gel is packaged in sealed packs. Being reusable/ rechargeable means that it doesn't really have an expiration date, making it a very sustainable choice. Ours has Aug 2024 expiration date on the box for medical regulation purposes, but it is fully sealed and orange in color, meaning that is perfectly good for use. Nothing goes bad on it otherwise.
These moisture absorbing packets can be used to:
- Absorb moisture in luggage, gym bags, purses, makeup kits etc.
- Pull moisture out of musty old books when sealed in a bag/ box with old books, documents, photos etc.
- Help preserve electronics, cell phones, watches, jewelry, computers and computer parts, cameras, lenses and other like items.
- Use as a rust preventer in toolboxes and safes.
- Storage of metal objects for conservation institutes, museums, organizations, ex. placing them in a plastic box with a dry moisture sorbent.
- Help preserve your garden seeds.
- Absorb moisture in music instrument cases, guitar case etc.
- Store in cupboards and cabinets. Safe to be used where food is stored.
- Keep with CDs, DVDs, etc.
- Use in the basement, garage, storage units or anywhere you need extra moisture absorption.
- Absorb moisture and odor from shoes.
Store in an airtight container to preserve freshness. Individual Wisepac packets are tear resistant.
Seeds preservation tips.
Moisture encourages germination of seeds and keeping them dry, keeps them fresh and lasting longer.
Some estimate that seeds can stay alive in room temperature in breathable containers for about 1-2 years. Dried and stored in air tight containers they can stay alive for about 5 years. Stored in freezer and air tight containers they can stay alive about 20 years or more. One method of drying seeds with silica gel is to store seeds and about equal volume of silica gel in a container for about a week. Then, take the seeds and store them in air tight container in a dry and cold place.
Metal objects or tools preservation for museums or for collectors tips.
Based on the paper by the Canadian Conservation Institute called "Preparing Silica Gel for Contained Storage of Metal Objects", Notes 9/14, an estimation is given that for a gallon of storage bag, it will need 200 grams of silica gel. Of course, this varies due to many factors, such the local humidity, etc, but this it provides some rule of thumb.
